Mr. Jon Reid, Director of Choirs, Burnett JH
JON REID is beginning his third year teaching choral music at Burnett Junior High after teaching four years at Veterans Memorial Middle School in Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Reid holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Bob Jones University and a Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University.
The choral program at Veterans Memorial Middle School grew exponentially under Mr. Reid’s direction, doubling in size in two years, and bringing the total number of young men in the program from three to thirty. Choirs at VMMS scored consistent superior ratings in both performance and sight reading through performance evaluations conducted by the Georgia Music Educators Association, and over 25 students successfully auditioned into the Georgia All State Choir under Mr. Reid’s direction. Burnett choirs under Mr. Reid's direction have earned top ratings at regional competitions and evaluations and have continued a steady growth of students in the program.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Reid recently accepted an invitation to participate in a Georgia Department of Education committee to revise the Georgie Performance Standards for Music to guide choral directors across the state of Georgia in planning their curriculum. In 2018, Mr. Reid took an active role in the Voices of the Valley Children’s Choir of Columbus, GA, serving as acting Artistic Director for several months of their performance season.
Mr. Reid is also an award-winning composer and arranger of sacred piano and choral music, with works published by Beckenhorst Press, Choristers Guild, Hinshaw Music, Majesty Music, Soundforth Music, and Walton Music. He is the recipient of the 2012 John Ness Beck Foundation Award, the 2019 Gregg Smith Composition Award, and the 2019 Indianapolis Symphonic Choir Christmas Carol Commission Competition.
Mr. Reid serves as an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Choral Directors Association. He is excited to be a Burnett Buccaneer and to continue the Burnett choirs’ reputation for choral excellence
