Dr. Susan Carter, Private Vocal Instructor, Wylie East HS

Dr. Susan Carter holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Texas Christian University (Nordan Scholar Award Recipient) and a DMA with Honors in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Texas Tech University (AT&T Chancellor Award Recipient).  

Dr. Susan Carter has sung professionally, nationally and internationally, for over 35 years performing in her early career as Susan Barrow with the Dallas Symphony Chorus, Dallas Lyric Opera and Ft. Worth Opera. Using the stage name, Carter Fricks, Carter performed leading operatic roles in Europe and the USA including ‘Queen of the Night’, ‘Lucia’, ‘Constanza’ and ‘Dona Anna’.   Dr. Carter has served as soprano soloist in NYC at Carnegie Hall in Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Town Hall’s All Berstein and performed ‘Vitellia’ in The Liederkranz Society’s production of Clemenza di Tito.  

Dr. Carter has served on music faculties at the University of Texas at Dallas, Lubbock Christian University, and Texas Tech University.   Dr. Carter recently retired as a tenured full professor, Director of Vocal Studies and former Assistant Dean at Missouri Western State University where she was awarded the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society Compass Award for Most Influential Professor and the Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching.   Dr. Carter served as the Director of Opera, placing 2nd in the nation as stage director in the National Opera Association’s national competition.  University students and community members from age 4 to 90 performed in her production of Mozart’s Magic Flute.  Students and faculty earned 11 awards for animation, costume/design, dramaturgy and performance from the Kennedy Center American College Awards.

 

Dr. Carter happily returns to her family and private studio in the DFW area and a 2nd production of Beauty and the Beast, her first earning her the ‘Ruby’ award at RRT in the Kansas City area.  Thank you Wylie East Choral Department for this opportunity to make new friends and work with such talented faculty and singers!
